The first Right Coast Formula F Series (RCFFS) race weekend was April 30 to May 2, 2021 at Mid-Ohio Sports Car course hosted by Formula Race Promotions (FRP), a premiere formula car event. RCFFS had three “micro” classes this weekend - Formula F (FF), Club Ford on Slick tires (CF), and Club Ford on Treaded tires (CFT).

The first race of the weekend was Saturday afternoon with 12 cars taking the green flag for the entire race. Track was cool and windy but sunny. Phil Kingham in his #27 Zink Club Ford with slicks (CF) pulled away from the field to leave Wayne Nicolette in his #2, Lola (CF) and Dan Pyanowski in his #36, Crossle (CFT) battling for position even though Dan was on treaded tires. A little farther back, another battle for position was going on for Formula F (FF) between Garey Guzman (#4, Swift DB6, FF), Steve Roux (#19, Wyvern, FF), and Chip Van Slyke (#34, Crossle, FF). Ultimately, it was Steve who took first place in FF, followed by Chip, then Garey, and Mark Davis (#17, Van Diemen, FF). With Phil and Wayne in first and second place respectively for CF, the other four Club Ford drivers on slicks raced each other to achieve a third place finish which went to Mike Rand (#37, Crossle, CF) followed by Sam Eyer (#98, Zink, CF), Tom Venturino (#42, Royale, CF), and Graham Earley (#9, Zink, CF). Dan got first in CFT and Neil Hamilton, also on treaded tires, in his #90, Van Diemen (CFT) got second.

The feature race for 12 cars was held Sunday morning which had sunshine and wind along with slightly warmer temperatures. The caution flag came out on the first lap due to contact between Dan and Wayne which unfortunately concluded their race. Phil again took off leaving the rest of field behind. In CF, the fight for second and third was happening between Mike and Sam until Mike pulled ahead to secure second place. In CF, Sam took third followed by Tom and Graham after Tom passed several cars to get his fourth place finish in CF. In Formula F, there were lead changes between Garey and Steve. A spin at Turn 11 for Garey gave first place to Steve and second place to Chip. Garey got restarted to secure third place leaving Mark in fourth for FF. Neil took first place in CFT and Dan got second in CFT.

The last race of the weekend (the bonus race) was after lunch. There was enough time between races that Wayne and Dan repaired their cars and were ready to go racing again. Eleven cars took the green flag and raced hard. Phil was being chased by Wayne until Wayne’s car started to overheat. The air temperature was now in the 80’s, twenty degrees warmer then the previous race but still windy. Wayne never had the opportunity to go after Phil again once his car did cool down and came in second behind Phil. Graham and Sam retired early. Tom kept up a good pace to secure third place in CF. In Formula F, the final order of finish was Steve, Chip, Garey, and Mark. In CFT, the finishing order was Dan and Neil.

Overall, a good race weekend with the weather improving each day and some awesome racing at the Mid Ohio track. Also, great to see Dave Harmison (#10, Crossle, CF) come out to cheer us all on. Looking forward to the next event at Pittsburgh on June 18 to 20, 2021.
