RCFFS News
The first Right Coast Formula F Series (RCFFS) race weekend was April 30 to May 2, 2021 at Mid-Ohio Sports Car course hosted by Formula Race Promotions (FRP), a premiere formula car event. RCFFS had three “micro” classes this weekend - Formula F (FF), Club Ford on Slick tires (CF), and Club Ford on Treaded tires (CFT).
The first race of the weekend was Saturday afternoon with 12 cars taking the green flag for the entire race. Track was cool and windy but sunny. Phil Kingham in his #27 Zink Club Ford with slicks (CF) pulled away from the field to leave Wayne Nicolette in his #2, Lola (CF) and Dan Pyanowski in his #36, Crossle (CFT) battling for position even though Dan was on treaded tires. A little farther back, another battle for position was going on for Formula F (FF) between Garey Guzman (#4, Swift DB6, FF), Steve Roux (#19, Wyvern, FF), and Chip Van Slyke (#34, Crossle, FF). Ultimately, it was Steve who took first place in FF, followed by Chip, then Garey, and Mark Davis (#17, Van Diemen, FF). With Phil and Wayne in first and second place respectively for CF, the other four Club Ford drivers on slicks raced each other to achieve a third place finish which went to Mike Rand (#37, Crossle, CF) followed by Sam Eyer (#98, Zink, CF), Tom Venturino (#42, Royale, CF), and Graham Earley (#9, Zink, CF). Dan got first in CFT and Neil Hamilton, also on treaded tires, in his #90, Van Diemen (CFT) got second. The feature race for 12 cars was held Sunday morning which had sunshine and wind along with slightly warmer temperatures. The caution flag came out on the first lap due to contact between Dan and Wayne which unfortunately concluded their race. Phil again took off leaving the rest of field behind. In CF, the fight for second and third was happening between Mike and Sam until Mike pulled ahead to secure second place. In CF, Sam took third followed by Tom and Graham after Tom passed several cars to get his fourth place finish in CF. In Formula F, there were lead changes between Garey and Steve. A spin at Turn 11 for Garey gave first place to Steve and second place to Chip. Garey got restarted to secure third place leaving Mark in fourth for FF. Neil took first place in CFT and Dan got second in CFT. The last race of the weekend (the bonus race) was after lunch. There was enough time between races that Wayne and Dan repaired their cars and were ready to go racing again. Eleven cars took the green flag and raced hard. Phil was being chased by Wayne until Wayne’s car started to overheat. The air temperature was now in the 80’s, twenty degrees warmer then the previous race but still windy. Wayne never had the opportunity to go after Phil again once his car did cool down and came in second behind Phil. Graham and Sam retired early. Tom kept up a good pace to secure third place in CF. In Formula F, the final order of finish was Steve, Chip, Garey, and Mark. In CFT, the finishing order was Dan and Neil. Overall, a good race weekend with the weather improving each day and some awesome racing at the Mid Ohio track. Also, great to see Dave Harmison (#10, Crossle, CF) come out to cheer us all on. Looking forward to the next event at Pittsburgh on June 18 to 20, 2021. Prepared by: Angela Slocum and David Gernert, 5/2/2021 Spring has arrived and with it - racing in the Northeast! What better place to race than with RCFFS at the great track of Mid-Ohio starting April 30th?

Again, this is a RCFFS race weekend with FRP and it doesn’t get any better than that! Mid-Ohio is a fun place to race and historically a great natural terrain road course that has seen everything from the SCCA Runoffs for years to CanAm cars to current Indy cars and everything you can imagine. If needed, SCCA Annual Tech Inspections will be available to competitors at the event. Registration links, the schedule, and other useful items are on our website. We’ll post other details and items as they become available. Just a reminder that RCFFS is a series for drivers by drivers. If you need help getting onto track, there are folks who can help you. Whether it’s needing a part or finding the gremlin in the engine, there are people who can help you both now and at the track. As always this is an inclusive race event catering to Formula F cars (FF, Formula Ford, Club Ford (CF), Historic/Vintage Ford (HF)) of all configurations and drivers of all ages with minimally demanding requirements - slicks, treaded tires, Kent, Cortina, or Honda power. Come out and play with us, Angela Slocum, David Gernert, and Will Velkoff RCFFS Liaisons Having remained in the paddock for the past few months due to COVID-19 shutdowns, we are now heading to the grid for the first race of 2020! Formula Race Promotions (FRP) is excited to get back on track and kick off their 2020 campaign in just under one month’s time. Putting the finishing touches on the June 19th – 21st weekend at the 2.80 mile, 18-turn Pittsburgh International Race Complex (PittRace), excitement is high as series officials prepare to wave the green flag and get the season rolling.
“We are looking forward to returning to a real racetrack as we continue working with the facility and SCCA Pro Racing to set appropriate COVID-19 guidelines that will be in place at the track,” expressed Bob Wright. “Our virtual series has been a surprising success, but I know all of us miss the smell of race fuel and some good, close wheel-to-wheel racing.” Taking place June 19th – 21st, Formula Race Promotions will run seven different race groups including Atlantic, Prototype, F1000, F1600, F2000, RCFFC, and Challenge Cup. The increased buzz on social media indicates teams and competitors are getting back on track - testing, finalizing livery designs, and completing upgrades for the 2020 season. PittRace has recently re-opened, and FRP’s weekend schedule will be up on the website shortly. Wright added, “We know that everyone is excited, but we need to approach the race weekend with some caution. It will be a different atmosphere in the paddock with continued social distancing guidelines, but the on-track action is bound to be as competitive as ever, especially with the amount of time between the close of 2019 and the start of 2020.” Formula Race Promotions is inviting any and all competitors to their kickoff event for 2020. Registration is open and hotels in the area have plenty of accommodations. We can’t wait to see you trackside! FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Contact: Info@RaceTechDevelopment.com Prepared by: Race Tech Development Release Date: February 20, 2020 Formula Race Promotions to Offer Digital Photo Packages in 2020 “Team, Individual and Social Media Packages Available” February 20, 2020 – Working with their media partner, RTD Media & Management (RTD), Formula Race Promotions (FRP) is pleased to offer promotional material through a digital media package. Working with an elite level photographer, RTD Media & Management will offer team, individual and social media photo packages to all competitors in the 2020 Formula Race Promotions program. “Bringing a new level of promotion to the series, we are happy to be able to offer these types of services,” explained Bob Wright. “Our goal is to make it easier for teams and drivers to promote themselves. While this can’t be done for free, we have been able to come to an agreement with RTD and their staff photographer to offer discounted photo packages in 2020.” In a generation where an online presence is vital to a company’s or organization’s success, drivers and teams have the opportunity to present themselves in a professional and striking manner. The fastest growing social platforms are all visual, such as Instagram, because the human eye is drawn to visuals. Using high-quality photos across all social platforms helps convey a theme of consistency and professionalism while setting a tone and reputation for a brand. “When we begin to assist a new client with their social platforms, the top issues we come across include inactive social pages and low-quality images and graphics,” stated Mike Maurini of RTD Media & Management. “If an organization or driver has a mediocre online presence, then the viewer will translate that back to the organization or driver as a whole.” By purchasing photo packages while at the track, teams and drivers have the opportunity to positively and professionally represent themselves, the series, their sponsors and the entire motorsports community, elevating their image and expanding their following. Please contact Media@RaceFRP.com to inquire about your photo packages. For more information on any of the Formula Race Promotions promoted series, please visit www.FormulaRacePromotions.com. In 2006, Formula Race Promotions started organizing superb single class professional racing events for F2000. Since then, FRP has brought F1600, Formula Atlantic and F1000 racers into the fold to provide high quality single class racing for those looking for a competitive environment and quality track time. Traditional club racing events have tended to feature mixed class race groups, and drivers who desire to compete in single class races have gravitated to FRP with their multiple races each weekend and the camaraderie of open wheel racing The Right Coast Series is a grassroots effort by Formula F and Club Formula F drivers to come together in significant numbers for single class competition. When the series was first organized in 2014, Formula Race Promotions was the first to offer Right Coast a separate run group during their weekend programs. This partnership has continued for six seasons through 2019 and now for 2020, FRP will take over full organization for the RCFFS program. Robert Wright of FRP has announced that the RCFFS will continue as a separate run group during FRP race events. RCFFS drivers will continue to be eligible with SCCA competition licenses (pro license not required) with drivers from other organizations also eligible under the SCCA license reciprocal acceptance program. Car eligibility rules for the RCFFS Formula F/Club Formula F series will continue to use the SCCA Formula F and Club Formula F rule sets. As always, Ford Kent/Cortina or Honda Fit engine are included; slick, treaded or shaved street radial tires are welcome. This alliance of FRP and Right Coast will continue to provide drivers with the opportunity for high quality, single class racing with multiple races each weekend. It is our hope that all of the drivers who have raced with Right Coast will continue to support the series and that drivers who have not yet taken the opportunity will find the expanded schedule and track selection to be very appealing and will join us. Joe Marcinski/Bob Wright Our 2020 schedule may be found here. We are now just 18 or so days away from the 50th Anniversary of Formula F and the American Road Race of Champions at Road Atlanta. Thanks, Joe Marcinski #04 Royale RP24 Club Ford We are now just inside two months away from the Oct 30 load in for the final event on the 2019 Right Coast Formula F Series presented by American Pen Company at Road Atlanta. The Golden Part 2 50th Anniversary of Formula F celebration will take place in conjunction with the American Road Race of Champions (ARRC) at historic Road Atlanta on November 1st thru the 3rd.
Our hosts for the weekend, the Atlanta Region of the SCCA, have provided us with a schedule that will see us qualifying for the celebratory races on Saturday afternoon after the ARRC program. Sunday will see us taking to the track for a Club Formula F only 15 lap race in the morning and a Formula F only 15 lap race early that afternoon. Our combined all inclusive, 20 lap Formula F and Club Formula F 50th Anniversary of Formula F feature race sponsored by Bob Melvin’s American Pen Company will run later in the afternoon of Sunday. This will be the last anniversary race where ALL Formula F cars can celebrate the 50th anniversary of our class. Ford Kent/Cortina or Honda powered, slicks or treads, as long as your car is SCCA legal you are welcome to come race with us. All VMC Licenses happily accepted as well! We are racing to celebrate Formula F almost 50 years to the month after Road Atlanta first hosted a FF National Championship race, over the Thanksgiving weekend of 1970. The National Championship continued through 1993 but Road Atlanta’s long and storied Formula F history continues to this day. In that time frame many Formula F drivers have progressed to higher levels of motorsport. The first, at Daytona in 1969, and second, right here at the then brand new Road Atlanta in 1970, SCCA National Championship driver, Skip Barber, who of course founded the famous racing school. Jimmie Vasser, the 1986 National Champion went on to win the CART Indy Car Championship in 1996. Eddie Miller, the 1972 and 1974 Champion also won a Super Vee title and moved up into Indy cars. And it isn’t just those who won the FF National Championship at Road Atlanta. Runoffs FF participant Michael Andretti went on a fabulous career in Indy Car as well as a stint as a Formula 1 driver for Team McLaren. Chip Robinson starred with the Jaguar team in IMSA. Dennis Firestone, the 1976 Champ also acquitted himself well at the Indy 500 and in Indy car racing. Double FF National Champion Bob Lobenberg (80 & 82) was a Trans Am star. Dave Weitzenhof is a four-time (77, 79, 81 & 87) Road Atlanta National Champion in FF. Additionally, Dave has as a FV title and two FC wins to bring his total of seven SCCA National Championships. Dave is expected to run this years event in a Zink Z10, similar to the car he won with in 1977 and 1979! These drivers and many others used what they learned in a Formula F, on the challenging Road Atlanta circuit to hone their driving skills and move up the motorsport ladder. So, in this 50th year of Formula F in the United States we have one final opportunity to celebrate this class, that we love, at one of the most historically significant tracks in the country. Registration is due to open on MotorsportReg.com on October 1 (click HERE to register). We urge you to enter as soon as the site opens. We will be following up with more details regarding the weekend as we get a little closer, so please stay tuned.
